Do You Need to be Perfect?

I don’t know about you, but I like things to be in order. This idiosyncrasy shines when I’m moving items around in a room, or hanging a picture, everything needs to be balanced. I admit, I’m the person who says, move the picture a little to the right, or it needs to be hung an inch higher.

I like cleanliness and order as it gives me peace. Clutter doesn’t. It’s like how we think. A whirlwind of thoughts, or a silent chatter now and then, or orderly thoughts strategizing a perfect outcome.

I find calm in my life with a clean house, but everyone’s definition of peace is different. Perhaps you find peace by walking barefoot in the park or reading a novel with a cup of your favorite brew, or it’s the final perusal of your attire before you leave for work in the morning to an office clutter free with everything in its place.

Perfection in our daily lives is unavoidable for many. You may have a boss that demands perfection and if everything isn’t perfect you may lose your job. However, life isn’t perfect. It’s messy. It’s flawed. You may have good intentions to start your day with a perfect routine, but small things can arise to throw your day off kilter.

For example, your dressed in the perfect suit, matching shoes, and jewelry, slowly walking down the stairs, as you’ve awakened an hour earlier to have a leisurely start to your day. Then the heel on your shoe breaks off, you find yourself in a state of panic to grab the railing, so you don’t fall and mess up your hair. Now, you need to change that suit because you don’t have another outfit for that pair of shoes. But before you go upstairs to change, you decide to start the toaster oven for your morning bagel. You’re only going to be a few minutes and the toaster is on a timer.

As you’re clasping the last button on your blouse your senses breathe in the taste of something burning. You dash down the stairs, miss the bottom step, slam into the wall, quickly turn around, and see the toaster oven smoking, as in your earlier frazzle you forgot to set the timer. Your breakfast bagel is now burnt scrapes birds won’t eat.

By the time you arrive at the office, your nerves are rattled, and your stomach is growling. The start of the day, so perfectly planned, a wrecking ball of unexpected events.

How you think and react to circumstances can either create a domino of peace or chaos. This scenario is dependent upon your perspective, moreover, if your intentions are a perfect outcome.

Perfection is in everyone. If you’re giving a speech, you want to deliver it perfectly as you don’t want to be humiliated. You want to be the perfect parent with perfect children.

But do you ever pause and ask, who are you trying to be perfect for? Is it for a boss? A spouse? Or is it God?

I remember this line from Robin Hood played by Kevin Costner with Morgan Freeman.

Morgan played Robin Hood’s friend who he saved from prison, and his character said to Robin, ‘no one is perfect, but you can have perfect intentions.’

You may seek perfection in everything you do, however, be gentle when things go awry. God is. He loves everything about you. Your flaws, scars, how you bite your nails when you’re nervous, as He created you. In His eyes, you are perfect just as you are.

There is no agenda. God wants His spirit to grow in you. To walk away from perfection, embrace your flaws, so He can lead you to greener pastures.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

You can’t deny the fullness of God’s love for you. He offered His only son as a sacrificial lamb so you can be saved.

Do you need to be perfect to ask for God’s help. No.

Jesus came to me when I desperately needed His help. I knew Him before, walked away for thirty years, yet, when I needed Him, He was there for me and healed my affliction instantly. Read my full testimony

These two verses in scripture are His promises to never leave you nor forsake you. In your imperfection, He is there walking the same path as you. Feeling the same pain with love and compassion.

At times, you may curse the unfairness of life. I did. But now, I’m filled with His peace. I am His daughter, and always will be. I’m not perfect. I have flaws I’m not even aware of. God sees them all and loves me.

The peace He blesses you with surpasses any need to be perfect.

The best gift is God’s peace. It’s with you always even when life isn’t perfect.

Before I was saved, I held on to everything I own. In truth, it kept me stuck. With His peace, I’m ready to let go, take the brave step forward, knowing He has already walked in my shoes. He is my Father. He knows what I need. And I trust in Him.

Whether you continue to walk a path based on perfection or allow your creator to love you just the way you are, flaws and all, is your choice. But just imagine the freedom of being you, without the need to be perfect.

Blog - Twisted Roots

Do you find yourself asking questions about new age, whether the practices and beliefs are leading your soul to redemption?

As a reformed new ager, I was saturated in the belief I could co-create with the universe and manifest a life of abundance. But I was deceived. This blog is to point you to the truth of God’s words and how He perceives the new age indoctrination.

Fine Art Photography

I always dreamed of being a professional photographer when I grew up. It was a journey to reach this goal, but I did it!

I owned a home-based studio for over a decade but have been shooting images for two decades. Now, semi-retired, I have a collection of my most cherished images of landscape or nature available for wall décor.
