Words Hurt

Do you remember as a kid the phrase:

“Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

I remember feeling empowered when I confronted bullies in school with these words. It made me feel strong, confident, and unbreakable. Yet, words hurt.

It’s what people say, the tone in their voice, that causes heart breaking pain. No one is invincible. Words crush your spirit and leave you in a state of doubt, fear, and a feeling of unworthiness. It can also beat you to the ground where the beautiful person you are fades into shadow.

I’ve had many experiences of verbal abuse, from bosses, friends, family members, and overtime, it can drive you to alternate means of happiness—drugs, alcohol, sugar addictions, and some say, religion...’he was so mean to her, he drove her to church.’

In some cases, this is true, as church is a place where you find peace and an escape from the cruelties of life. However, having said this, even people who attend church and perform acts in the name of Jesus will be unknown to Him...

The main words of this scripture are ‘but he who does the will of my Father in Heaven”, only then will you be known to Jesus.

As followers in Christ, doing the will of the Father in Heaven, is to obey the ten commandments, love your enemies, seek the Lord’s face in everything you do, and read the Word.

When I read Words in scripture, I find myself enlightened, wanting to learn more. The Words give me comfort; however, they can also convict, as the Word speaks truth. A different scenario then someone lashing out at you with words that tear your heart open. The Words in scripture are written to teach, guide and mold you as how God sees you, not how the world sees you. You may ask...how does that help when you’ve been shattered with words from someone close to you.

These Words from scripture give me comfort when my spirit is broken by harsh words.

I’ve also learned when I forgive the person who has hurt me, things change. The person is kinder, and you find yourself in the know of how God hears your words when voiced from the heart.

Yet, it’s the words that heal our hearts or break them. Moreover, your reaction which can lead to healing or falling down the rabbit hole of despair, resentment, and anger.

I’ve experienced days where my spirit is crushed. Even as I write this, I’m battling challenges in my life. However, I can choose to wallow in my despair or embrace the Word to guide me and give me hope through prayer.

It’s the Words, what you read, how you speak, what you watch or listen to, that leave a lasting imprint on your heart or the heart of others. Words encourage or lead you astray. They can change your perspective or help make that difficult decision. It’s words that play in your mind with positive intentions or otherwise. It can cripple or encourage you, especially when uttered by a person you love. This pain can plant seeds deep in your heart, creating grudges against the person who said them. They can also be the means to fulfill your dreams or be inspired and enlightened.

Before I gave my life to Christ Jesus on June 21, 2023, I was a follower of new age and gave my words to the universe, but there was no healing for my aching heart. It’s only through words uttered in prayer I found peace. Admittedly, days can be difficult. However, no obstacle is too great for God. He goes before you. He knows your heart and the plan for you to live in peace. As that is God’s will, for you to always have peace in your heart.

It can be exhausting to hold grudges, resentment, and anger towards another for what they said, but that’s what many of us do. However, there are two sides to every story. Perhaps the person who uttered the cruel words is hurting, and it’s their way to cry for help. I’ve been that person. Flipped to a person I don’t recognize—lashing out because I desperately wanted someone to recognize my pain. The only remedy I found is voicing my pain to the Lord, and leaving the battle at His feet. When I do this the heaviness is lifted and I awaken with songs of praise for Him.

His Words give me strength and courage to not give up.

You have the choice to allow words to have power over you or empower you to make a decision that leads to healing.

As with everything, the choice is yours.

Blog - Twisted Roots

Do you find yourself asking questions about new age, whether the practices and beliefs are leading your soul to redemption?

As a reformed new ager, I was saturated in the belief I could co-create with the universe and manifest a life of abundance. But I was deceived. This blog is to point you to the truth of God’s words and how He perceives the new age indoctrination.

Fine Art Photography

I always dreamed of being a professional photographer when I grew up. It was a journey to reach this goal, but I did it!

I owned a home-based studio for over a decade but have been shooting images for two decades. Now, semi-retired, I have a collection of my most cherished images of landscape or nature available for wall décor.
