Love Abandoned
One of my favorite things to do is to photograph old, abandoned buildings. I always wonder who lived there? Who built it? Why did they leave? I find the mystery fascinating.
But the search to find interesting elements to photograph wasn’t always rewarding.
I recall being excited to photograph an abandoned boarded up school. I searched for a way in and found an open decrepit door in the back of the building. As I entered, I glanced down a flight of stairs on my left and was taken aback at how dark it was. I quickly turned to my right, determined to continue investigating in hopes of objects left behind that would create a story. I climbed up a few cement stairs and entered an open space. The paint on the walls had peeled, the floor pitted with scattered rocky debris, but the musty scent had an unwelcomed feel to it.
I did take a few shots, but nothing worthy of sharing, and, in truth, the building felt creepy, so I didn’t linger too long. I continued my pursuit and found another abandoned schoolhouse.
This one wasn’t boarded and had easy access as there were no windowpanes. I approached with anticipation that the story I wanted to capture would present itself. The pit of my stomach fluttered when I saw the white weathered chair in the middle of the space. Behind it walls had deteriorated but I was intrigued with the texture and color.
But what makes this image interesting is the exposed frame and fabric on the back of the chair form the shape of a heart. You could almost hear the pitter patter of children who were once schooled there, and how that sound was missed. A special memorial to days gone by.
I’m Cathy Corbett, professional photographer, and what I love about my 10+ year photography career is the memory it’s forever yours.
